NWA Wrestle Birmingham
Saturday October 8th, 2005
Birmingham, AL @ Boutwell Auditorium
Hosted by Michael St. John w/Dan Masters
Crowd: 250-350
10/8 NWA wrestling made its return to the famed Boutwell Auditorium Saturday night, as NWA Wrestle Birmingham presented a show in the tradition of the Southeastern and Continental Championship Wrestling shows from the 1980s.
Wrestle Bimingham’s fifth rendition of Legendspalooza drew 600. That’s roughly the same as they drew in August at Zamora Temple in the suburb of Irondale. But this crowd was less forgiving and not nearly as hot. The relative intimacy of Zamora makes for a much better atmosphere. So does not letting a show run over 3 hours long. This one went 3:30.
<B>(1) Sonny Siaki (with Robert Fuller) beat The Wrestler in 9:23.</B> Fuller was wearing the the full-blown Coronel Sanders outfit. He’s still major league level doing the gimmick, even if there’s no major league interest in something so cartoonish. You know how WWE is about credibility in their characters. In any case, I’ve always been a Fuller mark, which turned out to be a good thing because I was about to get an OD. The Tennessee Stud has a formidable stable. He was at ringside with five different wrestlers in a total of six matches.
Wrestler jumped out on top. Siaki ate a dropkick and bailed. Fuller fanned Siaki with his hat. Siaki claimed his hair was being pulled. There’s nothing there to pull. Siaki threw a ton of punches in this match. Wrestler got a baseball slide and Siaki leveled him with a superkick. Siaki used the ropes for extra leverage on the abdominal stretch, but Wrestler hiptossed out of it. Wrestler fired back with chops. Wrestler got two with a bodyslam. Wrestler tried for a twisting crossbody and Siaki rolled though to score the pinfall.
Fuller introduced Siaki as the newest member of his stable. Fuller said Siaki had heavyweight title written all over him. Fuller said Siaki looked like The Rock. There’s a resemblance, but Siaki is a lot thicker than the Hollywood version of Rock. Siaki said it was a new era (pronounced ew-wa) and “Cocky Siaki” was the new soopastar in Wrestle Birmingham.
<B>(2) Mike Jackson & Tony Ladu beat Jimmy Powell & Alan Martin via DQ at 11:30.</B> This was significantly better than I expected. Jackson and Martin worked the lion share of the match. That was a plus. Martin’s gut make Animal look svelte. He doesn’t look anything like the guy that did jobs on the old TBS studio shows. But he took good bumps and provided a solid base for Jackson’s senior division aerial attack. Jackson and Ladu gave Martin a perilous looking double backdrop and sent him over the top with a tandem clothesline. Jackson hit a dive to the outside. Powell got involved. Jackson went one on two with a headlock takeover/headscissors combo. Powell and Martin took a lengthy timeout to regroup. Jackson squared off with Powell in a legit match for the first time since their feud began. Powell got in one blow and tagged out. Jackson did his ropes walk spot on Martin. Ladu used a body scissors. At 7:30, Martin hit an atomic drop into a Russian legsweep on Jackson for some false heat. Jackson hit a DDT and tagged out. Martin gave Ladu a low blow. Ladu took major heat. They went four-way action off the hot tag. Powell and Martin had a meeting of the minds. Jackson put Martin in the sleeper. Martin instigated a bump with referee Jerry Stubbs who called it a DQ. Postmatch, Powell took a chair to the backs of Ladu and Jackson. Ladu konked Powell with a chair to drive the heels away.
<B>(3) River D’Angelo vs. Bill Franklin was a no contest (5:43).</B> Why? Worst match in the company’s brief history. The crowd crapped all over it. D’Angelo has the lamest shooter gimmick on the planet. Martin attacked the both of them to avoid prolonging the embarrassment. D’Angelo and Franklin dumped Martin out and agreed to a truce. This match derailed the momentum of what had been a solid show.
<B>(4) Sonny Siaki (with Robert Fuller) beat Ranger Ross in 3:33.</B> Ross scheduled match against Ali Baba was dropped. Ross had cut an anti-Arab promo at the August show to set it up. Siaki used the Oriental thumb thrust to the throat. He followed up with a pair of lariats. Ross brought the Kung Fu offense out of mothballs. Ross dropkicked Siaki for a near fall. Siaki took a bump to the apron. When Ross tried to suplex Siaki back to the inside, Fuller grabbed Ross by the leg and held on for dear life while senior official Roy George made the three count.
Fuller said Siaki was unbeatable. He puts his guys over huge. Fuller revealed that the Wrestle Birmingham tag titles were “hanging up in the air.” St. John said the title had been vacated due to Scott Armstrong's injury which made no sense since Fuller and Jimmy Golden were the champs. I'm guessing that this airs out of sequence for reasons that will become obvious. Siaki guaranteed Fuller that “Mister Number One” would bring the tag titles home to Stud’s Stable.
<B>(5) Jimmy Powell beat Brad Armstrong via chicanery in 6:42.</B>Powell tried to sell Brad one of his motivational DVDs. The dude can talk. Brad told him where he could stick it. Powell clocked Brad with his briefcase and it was on. Armstrong gathered his senses and fired back. Powell begged. Armstrong hit a high kneelift. Powell got filthy rotten. Powell sold huge for Armstong’s comeback. Armstong hit an impressive standing dropkick for a near fall. Powell went for the briefcase. Armstrong took the case away from Powell but before he could use it, George grabbed it out of his hands. Powell gave Armstrong a knee. While the ref was checking Armstrong, Powell took a foreign object out the briefcase. Powell clocked Armstrong, made a major production out sticking the object down his tights, and covered for the three count.
<B>(6) McNasty (with Robert Fuller) beat Bill Dundee in 6:42.</B> Dundee looked virtually the same as he did at the end of USWA. McNasty bumped like mad for Dundee’s offense. He got hung up in the ropes and took a rich upside-down bump to the floor. McNasty pounded on Dundee. He gave Dundee the eye burn. Fuller interfered. McNasty choked Dundee with one his frilly Ultimate Warrior leg things. Dundee scored with a donkey kick to the groin. Fuller got up on the apron to distract. McNasty whacked Dundee with Fuller’s cane and that was all she wrote.
Fuller cut another great promo. He put McNasty over like a deity. The NWA sheriff, Roy Lee Welch came to ringside. He accused Fuller of hand-picking the Stable’s opponents. Welch said there was a mystery opponent in McNasty’s future. Fuller wanted to know how in the world McNasty was supposed to prepare for that? “You’re family, but you sure don’t act like family.” Fuller said Welch never liked him and had just proved it front of all of Alabama. Awesome stuff.
<B>(7) Elix Skipper (with Robert Fuller) vs. Steve Armstrong went to a time limit (8 minutes?) draw.</B> Skipper is awesome as a cool heel. Fans accept Steve as a face, but it would be a stretch If he wasn’t an Armstrong. He head was shaved almost bald. It didn’t take Steve long to try to get at Fuller. Some nice chain here with Steve working the hammerlock. Skipper came back with a spinal tap that Steve sold like a corpse. They got their signals crossed on a vertical suplex. Steve rolled out from under Skipper’s guillotine legdrop. Steve made a left-handed comeback. Steve hit a top rope lariat just before the bell. Steve wanted five more minutes. Skipper wouldn’t go for it. Siaki came out there as well.
Steve was hot. He swore which is a no-no on these shows. Steve said Fuller was Tennessee Trash and his team were nothing but TNA goofs. Steve said they started it but it wasn’t finished. The officials had to restrain Steve.
Fuller said Siaki and Skipper were the tag team of the future and would be the greatest ever. Said he hadn’t seen anything like them in his 30 year career. Skipper assured Fuller that his confidence would pay off. “This is our house…we’re taking over.,,the belts will be ours.” Fuller said the people would learn to love ‘em.
<B>(8) Roy Lee Welch beat Dennis Condrey after a masked man missile dropkicked Condrey (4:09).</B> Condrey reminded the fans that the other lover boy, Lee Thomas was no longer with us. Condrey had defeated Thomas in a loser leaves town match at the August show. Welch came out wearing a crown. Condrey attacked Welch outside the ring and beat the hell out of him for a good five minutes. Condrey worked on Welch’s back with a series of whips into the stage. Condrey had Welch in an abdominal stretch at ringside when George finally signaled for the opening bell. Condrey tossed Welch onto the announcer’s table. Condrey had Welch in an abdominal stretch when the mystery man (ha, ha) climbed to the top rope and nailed the missile dropkick. Welch covered for the three count.
Welch wanted the record book to show that he pinned Condrey in his final match. Welch started to walk back to the dressing room. Condrey called Welch “Leroy” and got mad because he was walking away from him. Condrey accused Welch of paying Lee Thomas to do the run in. Condrey said Tommy Rich was going to have to pay the price for Welch’s actions. So, presumably it’s Condrey vs. Rich at the next show.
Condrey’s performance was the highlight of the evening in my book.
Coming out of the intermission, they did a lengthy induction ceremony for the NWA Hall of Fame – Wrestle Birmingham division. Condrey, Jackson and Ladu, Tom Prichard, Wendell Cooley, Adrian Street and Miss Linda, Welch, Powell, Dundee, and television announcer Michael St. John were all honored with trophy presentations. Manager and “world famous parapsychologist” Johnny Peebles III was inducted along with Great Kaiser. I had no idea who they were when they did their schtick at the first Wrestle Birmingham show. Still don’t. Nobody else seems too, either. It must be a rib. Prichard had fond memories of his stormy relationship with the fans in this area and concluded with the following. “While this is a great honor, I hate your guts tonight.”
<B>(9) Adrian Street (with Miss Linda) vs. Wendell Cooley (with Fuller) was a no contest (7:10).</B> Street said that back in the day, (1986 feud of the year *sigh*) Cooley was the toughest wrestler he had to face. The roles were reversed in those days, as Cooley was the hottest babyface in the territory. But Street had lost all respect for Cooley due to his alignment with Fuller. Street gave Cooley a proper stretching. Cooley dodged a charging knee. Street crunched his knee on the turnbuckle. The crowd popped when Cooley forcing Fuller to take a seat. Cooley applied a single leg crab. Linda got concerned about her man. Fuller choked the life out of Linda. Street popped Fuller to rescue Linda. The ref had seen enough. The fans booed the finish. Siaki and Skipper hit the ring. The Stable started beating on Street. Cooley punched Fuller and cleaned house on Stud’s Stable.
Street thanked Cooley and took back his earlier remarks. Street put Cooley over. Cooley said that he stood alone and thanked Fuller for the money. Cooley accepted Street’s invitation to form a tag team to take on Siaki and Skipper.
<B>(10) “Roaddog” Jesse James beat Tom Prichard to win the NWA Alabama Heavyweight Title in 11:09.</B> James did the DX intro using the line “the NWA proudly presents to you the seven-time WWE tag team champion of the world.” Prichard said that he had beaten James’ father and his brothers and given the chance, he would kick James’ mother in the teeth. Prichard said he represented the state of Alabama and James’ worst nightmare. Prichard stalled. James’ put Prichard on the deck and Dr. Tom took a powder. Prichard teased a foreign object. Prichard tried a test of strength and got his fingers stomped. Prichard blasted James with the foreign object. James went down like a ton of bricks. Prichard covered but James managed to roll a shoulder. When James kicked out of an elbow drop, Prichard showed his frustration. James drove Prichard to the outside with a dropkick. Prichard pulled the weapon out and pounded James on the neck. James ducked a clothesline and clotheslined Prichard for a double down spot. Prichard tried for a piledriver but James countered with a backdrop. James got a near fall after a series of right hands. James reversed Prichard on a vertical suplex. James then hit the pump handle slam to win the title clean.
James issued a challenge to NWA Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett for a title vs. title match on Thanksgiving Night.
<B>(11) “The Bullet” Bob Armstrong beat Jimmy Golden (with Robert Fuller) in a Loser Leaves Town match (4:08) .</B> McNasty, Siaki and Skipper hit the ring to join Golden for a beatdown on Bullet and Brickhouse. Skipper laid Brick out with a top rope spinwheel kick. The Armstrong boys hit the ring to drive Stud’s Stable to the back. Brown was helped to the back and Stubbs took over as referee. Stubbs fast counted when Golden put Bullet’s shoulders on the mat. Bullet came back with open hand chops. Stubbs made a super slow count for Bullet’s pin attempt. Stubbs held Bullet to give Golden a free shot. It turned into another free-for-all between Stud’s Stable and the Armstrong boys. Brown made his way back to the ring. He smoked Stubbs with a facebuster and hit a swinging neckbreaker on Golden. Bullet punked Golden out. Brown made a fast three count. The finish got over well.
Bullet waved goodbye to Golden. Brown said somebody got “tore up from the floor up.” Brown said he would be at the Armstrongs for Thanksgiving Dinner and wanted collard greens, chitlins and cornbread. It looked like the Armstrong boys were getting off on Brick’s promo.
NOTES: It appears that Thanksgiving Night will have Siaki & Skipper vs. Cooley & Street for the tag titles, Condrey vs. Rich, and possibly James vs. Jarrett…Stay tuned to Wrestle Birmingham TV (ABC 33/40 in Birmingham) on Friday nights at 12:35 am for further developments…The promotion released 100 free general admission tickets to evacuees from Hurricane Katrina…It was just over 20 years ago this week that Brown and Norvell Austin, known as the Soul Patrol, defeated the Nightmares (Ken Wayne & Danny Davis) at Boutwell to become the Southeastern Tag Team Champions…Scott Armstong was at the gimmick table on crutches. Scott tore his ACL in a match in Crestview about 6 weeks ago. He didn’t go to the doctor and tried to wrestle a tag match with his dad the next week. The knee buckled right away. Scott credited Skipper, who was his opponent at the time, for some quick thinking to keep it from being a worse situation than it already was. Scott was able to tag out and stay on the apron for the remainder of the match. He hopes to be back in the ring by February or March. Ironically, Scott’s 11 year-old son is also on crutches after emergency surgery for a hip displacement…Dan Masters managed to do commentary with St. John, get in some ring announcing and tape footage for his Wrestle Jam TV show (WCAG-33 in LaGrange, Ga and TV 16 in Columbus).
